Los Angeles is the heart of the television and movie industry in the US, but it’s also home to a vibrant and dynamic live theater community. Several venues host the touring companies of Broadway shows, as well as excellent original and classic productions.

The Geffen Playhouse, located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, consists of two performance spaces: the Gil Cates Theater, which usually puts on five productions per season; and the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, a smaller, more flexible venue. Temporarily closed due to the pandemic, the Geffen Playhouse plans to reopen for the 2021 season with The Present.

A Noise Within (ANW), in Pasadena, is a classical repertory company that mounts several stage plays each season. Recent productions include Othello, Man of La Mancha, The Winter’s Tale, and Frankenstein. For the Fall 2020 season, ANW is presenting virtual play readings as well as videos of their productions.

The Mark Taper Forum, which is part of Center Theatre Group, puts on plays year-round, and is noted for having won two consecutive Pulitzer Prizes for its productions of The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America. Closed for the fall 2020 season, the Mark Taper Forum offers several virtual programs on their digital stage.
